The Best Time of Year to Cruise the Mediterranean

Greece, Italy, Spain, and other destinations around the Mediterranean are beautiful year-round and you’ll discover a variety of cultural activities, historic sites, and regional events to enjoy in any given month. However, there are certain times of the year that are better for a cruise trip than others. The region does experience weather changes and there are some months of the year that are more crowded than others.

The summer months are prime travel season in the Mediterranean because this is the perfect time to soak up the sun and enjoy the hot weather. However, this doesn’t always mean it’s the best time to go on a cruise. Many travelers find that May through June and September through October are great times of year to cruise the Mediterranean because of fewer crowds at port destinations and comfortable temperatures. Plus, the flowers and plants are in full bloom during the spring months.

Some destinations, such as Malta and Corsica, have almost perfect weather in late March and April. If you’re looking to enjoy the native wildlife or go on nature excursions, plan a trip during the spring or late fall months to explore many outdoor areas comfortably. September through November are the shoulder season months in the Mediterranean, which means it’s a good time to avoid big crowds in major port cities and soak up the amazing weather. September and October are also wine season, so if you’re planning to visit the vineyards or take a winery tour, this would be the best time of year to do it.

Still, if all you want to do is relax on the beach and soak up the sun, mid- to late summer will be your best bets for warm temperatures and long beach days. Even though many of the beaches are crowded, you’ll enjoy the hot climate and an abundance of water activities during this time of year.
