Mitsui Ocean Sakura: Japan Cruising on a New All-Suite Ship

A second ship, with Japan at its heart

Mitsui Ocean Sakura brings a different pace to Japan cruising: a 458-guest, all-suite ship with a programme built around shorter domestic voyages, Japanese dining and time to enjoy coastal ports.

Mitsui’s September 17, 2026 announcement records Sakura’s naming ceremony in Yokohama the previous day and scheduled inaugural departure on September 19. The current US ship page presents Sakura alongside Mitsui Ocean Fuji as the line’s two-ship fleet. This guide uses those official sources rather than treating the older late-2026 launch forecast as current news.

What makes Sakura worth watching?

At 32,477 gross tons and about 650 feet long, Sakura sits at the smaller end of ocean cruising. Mitsui says every suite has an ocean view, and the ship’s size opens up access to a mix of major and smaller Japanese ports. The appeal is a comfortable base for exploring Japan, rather than a large floating resort.

Japanese touches onboard

Sushi Bar Shiosai on Deck 5 offers counter and table seating with multi-course menus combining sushi, seasonal dishes and sake. On Deck 8, the Grand Pool area includes an open-air footbath, a quieter way to unwind without changing into swimwear.

The line describes its hospitality through “omotenashi”: attentive service rooted in Japanese tradition. Food, cultural programmes and port experiences are central to the ship’s identity.

Shorter voyages, with 2027 in view

The September announcement describes an initial focus on short- and medium-length domestic voyages under the Japanese flag. It lists 29 cruises through December 2026 and 61 announced through September 2027, including seasonal sailings. Those are programme announcements, not a promise that every departure is available to North American guests.

One current US listing, Southern Japan Spring Blooms, runs March 27 to April 1, 2027, from Yokohama to Miyazaki and Suo-Oshima and back to Yokohama, with sea days between ports. The operator cautions that cherry blossom viewing depends on natural conditions.

What is included, and what needs checking?

The launch announcement describes suite accommodation, dining, more than 200 alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, entertainment, Wi-Fi, selected onboard activities and half-day shore excursions in most ports as part of the onboard experience.

Do not read that as every restaurant, drink or tour being included. Mitsui’s cruise contract says specialty dining, excursions and internet are included only where expressly covered by the fare, and some beverages and services carry charges. Ask for the written inclusions for your exact sailing, especially Sushi Bar Shiosai, excursions, transfers and flights.

Before choosing a sailing

  • Confirm that your departure can be booked from North America and that the itinerary suits your travel plans.
  • Check suite category, dining reservations, excursion arrangements and any extra charges.
  • Read the voyage’s boarding information for dress code, travel documents and arrival instructions.
  • Allow for schedule changes and seasonal conditions. A spring itinerary is not a guarantee of blossoms.

For travellers who want Japan to shape the holiday onboard as well as ashore, Sakura is a ship to put on the shortlist. The deciding factor is the actual voyage and its terms, not simply the ship’s newness.
