Lindblad Celebrates Centennial of Shackleton's Voyage

Passengers can relive Sir Ernest Shackleton’s famous Antarctic Expedition

Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic celebrates one of the most famous expeditions in modern history – Sir Ernest Shackleton’s crossing of Antarctica. Two cruises will host the celebration with special events, activities, and amenities on the 2014-2015 voyages to Antarctica.

An expedition team will lead passengers aboard National Geographic Explorer and National Geographic Orion on the storied path of Shackleton and his men on their ill-fated attempt to cross Antarctica by foot. And as Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic is renowned for highlighting photography on its expeditions, the season will be dedicated to Shackleton’s expedition photographer, Frank Hurley.

Assisting Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic is National Geographic writer/photographer Kim Heacox, the author of Shackleton: The Antarctic Challenge. Together with Lindblad Expeditions, Heacox has created an entertaining and inspirational multi-media presentation that brings Hurley’s artistry into focus and highlights the journey.

Passengers will take to the ice themselves, led by a National Geographic photographer and a Lindblad-National Geographic certified photo instructor. They’ll take inspiring hikes among the vast beauty of the Antarctic alongside naturalists and historians who will recount Shackleton’s journey atop this untouched and challenging terrain.

Each guest will be given a commemorative Centennial vintage-style edition parka, made with high-tech fabrication for maximum comfort. Other highlights include guest speakers and a toast to Shackleton and his crew with the same whiskey from the original voyage – Mackinlay’s Rare Old Highland Malt –remnants of 25 cases of which were discovered in February 2007.
