American Cruise Line recently announced an enticing new twist to all their 2014 Mississippi and Columbia river tours – complimentary shore excursions.

Valued at more than $300 per person, shore excursions on the Mississippi River cruises include the Battles of Vicksburg Tour, where guests explore the site of one of the Civil War’s legendary battles. The Oak Alley Plantation Tour take visitors on a walk through a canopy of 300-year-old oak trees while sipping Mint Juleps. At Hannibal, Missouri, a trolley tour cruises through this historic town, which includes a visit to the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum.

On the Columbia and Snake River tours, a highlight is the Mount St. Helens Tour, where guests take a scenic bus ride up to the St. Helens Johnston Ridge Observatory, perched on a bluff overlooking the crater and lava dome. Another excursion is a visit to the Columbia Gorge Discover Center, which holds and interactive museum, filled with exhibits on local history and culture. A favorite for wine enthusiasts, the Winery Tour in Richland, Washington, includes a narrated winery tour and samples of the Tri-Cities region’s award-winning wines.
