Viking Impresses on the Douro

Portugal’s Douro River puts many constraints on the height and width of the ships that sail it. And yet, Viking River Cruises has launched two new ships on the river – without sacrificing any of the line’s high standards for its vessels.

Viking Hemming and Viking Torgil – both launched in March – are the result of a collaboration with Douro Azul, each carrying 106 passengers in classic Viking style. The line’s typical Scandinavian airiness and space are evident onboard, and the ships’ design is accented by local ceramics and crafts that bring the flavor of the destination to the vessels.

Viking’s suites come with full separate rooms and sliding pocket doors, while 302-square-foot Verandah Suites feature walk-in closets, spacious showers with glass doors, a private veranda, and a French balcony in the bedroom.

The Douro ships are also the first of Viking’s vessels to feature a swimming pool, which offers plenty of deck space for relaxation. Guests will also find a unique onboard shop stocked with outstanding Portuguese goods, including local specialties such as cork handbags and jewelry.

Cruisers will notice only one major casualty of the ships’ reduced space. The Aquavit Lounge’s outdoor dining that is found on the Longships is not available on these smaller vessels. However, the dining room features windows that can be opened for an outdoor feeling.

Viking Hemming and Viking Torgil sail seven-night cruises on the Douro River, complete with a trip to the charming university city of Salamanca, Spain. Travelers on the itinerary also have the chance to discover the region’s exceptional olive oils, spectacular port wines, local tin crafts, pottery, and baskets.
