Unforgettable shore experiences on this iconic Greek isle
At the top of the island’s cliffs are Fira and Oia, both of which make for memorable day trips. With charming pedestrian-only streets and some of the world’s most memorable views of the caldera below, these villages are a must for visitors to Santorini. Be sure to catch the spectacular sunset from Oia.
History buffs can experience two notable archeological sites on the island, including Akrotiri, a former Minoan settlement with well-preserved buildings. At Ancient Thira, ruins include broken down temples and sanctuaries dating all the way back to the 4th century BC.
For an unforgettable experience, take a boat excursion across the caldera to the uninhabited volcanic islands of Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni. The islands still spout volcanic gasses, and visitors can even take a dip in a thermal mud bath. And while Santorini’s black sand beaches aren’t the best in the Mediterranean, Kamari is the one to visit, with sun beds, lifeguards, pedal boats, and bars.
A Taste of Greece
Some of Greece’s finest white wines come from Santorini, where visitors can take tours of vineyards and wineries and enjoy tastings or bring home bottles for later. For a memorable meal, the gourmet Selene serves local yet creative Greek cuisine, while Oia’s romantic Ambrosia has just 11 tables – and some of the best views overlooking the caldera. For something a bit more affordable, Roka is local favorite in Oia for its authentic and tasty fare.
