Shopping in Manama
The main souk (marketplace) is entered through a distinctive archway that once welcomed visitors to Bahrain as they stepped off their ships. Shoppers can find almost anything at the souk, from spices and herbs to brassware and carpets – even parrots. Be sure to visit specialty areas selling gold and diamonds, spices, and bolts of cloth. On Wednesdays, a craft market takes place across from the Adhari Hotel. Modern shopping takes place at the Bahrain Commercial Complex and Yateem Centre.
Sites and Culture
Manama’s noteworthy sites include Pearl Monument, the beautifully designed Al Fadhel Mosque, and the Mina Manama, a port where visitors can see boats being built. To take in some culture, travelers can enjoy modern art at the New Museum, exhibits on daily life at the Heritage Center, displays of molding and engraving at Gulf Arabesque, and early Koranic texts on display at the Beit Al Quran.
Eating Out in Manama
The stylish Mezzaluna offers an international menu in a sophisticated atmosphere. Be sure to order something off the excellent wine list. Another fashionable choice is La Fontaine, particularly for a winter dinner in the illuminated courtyard. For more local flavors, Rayés serves up Lebanese cuisine at the water’s edge in the Coral Bay complex.
