American Queen Launches Refurbished Empress

American Empress will sail historically-minded cruises in the Pacific Northwest

History buffs will enjoy the U.S. Pacific Northwest, where America’s pioneer history is celebrated at nearly every turn.
On April 5, the newly refurbished American Empress from the American Queen Steamboat Company embarked on her maiden voyage on the Columbia and Snake Rivers. The nine-day cruise leaves from Portland, Oregon, exploring the Pacific Northwest.

The itinerary offers complimentary shore excursions in every port, focused on the cultural and historical landmarks of the region’s first settlers. A variety of additional Premium Experience Excursions are also available, such as the Walla Walla Wine Trail and the Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum. In addition, the Riverlorian, an onboard history and culture expert, provides daily lectures.

In Astoria, Oregon, guests can visit the 19th-century George Flavel House and tour the Clatsop County Heritage Museum. Another option is the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center on the Cape of Disappointment. On a visit to Stevenson, Washington, guests get a look at the Colombia Gorge and a tour of the Bonneville Dam.

Other stops include The Dalles, Oregon, with excursion options such as browsing local boutiques and the Sunshine Mills Winery, or learning about the life of settlers at the County Mercantile Store. In Clarkston, Washington, visitors can learn the story of the Nez Pearce Native American Tribe who assisted Lewis and Clark at the Clarkston Heritage Museum.

Fares for the Columbia and Snake River cruise include a pre-cruise hotel stay and fresh regional cuisine with complimentary beer and wine at dinner.
